Hey Doc,

I’m really getting into this advice column thing. I used to think theology was like math – not practical!  But you’re giving me a whole new perspective. You really helped that chick dump that nut case with the pharmalacteries tied on his head.  Did she ever marry the Russian dude? And that guy  that couldn’t get out of bed –I thought that he was down about politics until you showed how it was theological.  Wow, the lights went on there!  So, I’m going to give you a try. It’s kind of embarrassing, but I’m 32 and still living at home. I don’t exactly have a steady job either. The good thing is that I have time to devote to beach ministry—friendship evangelism mostly. Mom’s cool about it, but Dad just kind of clears his throat and looks at the floor. What should I do? What’s the theological connection?

Dear Surfer Boy,

I am pleased that I have helped you understand the practical outworking of theology. There is a great debate about whether a person’s theology determines his actions or whether his actions determine his theology. I think that both perspectives are true, but let’s not get muddled in theory. Let’s talk about you. You may have an inadequate theology about work and family, since you are avoiding both. These areas are not worldly distractions from spiritual pursuits. They are means that God has given us to serve and glorify him, and they are the means he uses to mature us into the image of his Son. For these reasons, God intends most Christians to pursue both work and family. Why aren’t you? I will accept that your “friendship evangelism” interest is sincere. I also suspect that you are a lazy bum. As for the young lady and Russian gentleman, I recently received a nice card from the delighted newlyweds in Siberia. I recommend that you follow their example.
