Dear Dr. Solomon,

I’m a long-time reader of New Covenant Journal and enthusiastically embrace the tenets of New Covenant Theology. The problem is my “friend” who believes that the Old Covenant Law is still in effect. He reasons that if law keeping brings blessing to the Jews, it will also bring blessing to the rest of God's people. So now he wears a yarmulke, refuses to shave, and ties a phylactery on his forehead. This would be one thing if he were a Jew from Brooklyn, but he’s a Baptist from Tulsa. His proposals for marriage are becoming more frequent as he is anxious to begin a family. He wants to have twelve sons and name them after the tribes of Israel. I’m all for large families but am uncomfortable with a theological perspective that I believe is in error. I’m so confused. Help!

Miss Luv,

Your espousal of New Covenant Theology proves you an intelligent woman who takes the Bible seriously, but matters of love often fog one's thinking. I would urge caution with a man whose theology leads him to wear a phylactery. Peculiar theology always bears peculiar fruit. Do you want to be married to this type of fruit? Trust God in this area of marriage and have patience. He will provide what is best.
