Dear Dr. Solomon,
After befriending some Presbyterians, my husband has discovered that the Old Testament Sabbath commandment applies now. So we no longer eat at a restaurant after church, since that would contribute to the restaurant staff’s breaking of the Sabbath. And at lunchtime our house fills up with Presbyterians who eat like locusts. They may all be enjoying Sabbath rest, but I’m working myself silly servicing all the food and drink! I think this is a theological problem, so I’m asking you what I should do?
Exhausted on the Sabbath
Dear Exhausted on the Sabbath,
Yes, this is a theological malady and Bible study is the curative. Christians are not bound under God’s Covenant with Israel. All is fulfilled in Christ! This truth is not hidden in the New Testament—it is a theme throughout. But if your husband remains unconvinced, at least mention that the Sabbath is commanded to be observed on Saturday. And if the Presbyterians still want to come for lunch, make it a potluck.
